The Joys of Walking

A couple of years ago, I used to run daily.

Before you picture me in athletic gear and Nike running shoes with beads of sweat on my forehead, let me tell you that I just ran indoors. I did it for two reasons: first, I didn’t want to see “bad-vibe” neighbours (our lovely ex-yaya who propagated malicious rumours against us ‘round the village was still working for a neighbour back then) and second, I didn’t have athletic gear or running shoes. LOL!

But you know what? It still worked. I had quick (okay, relatively quicker) metabolism and strong legs. It wasn’t hard for me to lose weight then.

Until I stopped because of weak knees.

I was still breastfeeding heavily then so I attributed the knee pain to it, but running also contributed, so I just stopped. And then I grew fatter and fatter… /sob story

But recently, I noticed that my knees are no longer aching. It’s as if the knee pain didn’t exist at all. Because I’ve gotten a lot heavier and most of my clothes no longer fit me, I was motivated to exercise again. I couldn’t run again though, at least, not yet. I had to start with something easier, like walking.

For a couple of weeks now, I’ve been taking Yuri walking around our village. Yuri is at that age where he’s already fun to be with. We talk a lot when we walk, and the little guy’s pretty funny!

I also love that we see many of our neighbours (ex-yaya is no longer here!!! Yay!) along the way and get to greet them a good afternoon. We especially like greeting retirees and old people tending to their gardens. They look so calm and serene.

Who doesn’t love afternoon skyscapes?

Yuri loves picking flowers and giving them to me

And it’s a great learning opportunity for Yuri who’s entering preschool in a few months. We look at different plants and flowers (and sometimes pick them) and just learn about the world in general!

Sometimes we play “tanod” and spot unattended doggies. Bawal yan!

And then we inevitably end up at the playground. It looks quite forlorn here because the grass was just cut; green grounds are the best!

At the end of the day, when we go home sweaty and tired, getting fitter will just be a great added bonus.

And then we go home...

And then we go home…

It’s also a goal of mine to walk, which of course hasn’t happened still. LOL. You have such a nice place to walk around in.

Awww I love your neighborhood! Wish we live in a village like that right now. The kids would surely go crazy over the playground.

Hi Mommy Maan! 🙂 I love your neighborhood! Parang it’s a very peaceful place and safe for kids. And oh… How I miss running, too. This flabby skin in my tummy reminds me that I have to get back on running or at least jogging, but I don’t have running shoes yet. Pinamigay ko kasi yung dati ko noong namanas paa ko due to pregnancy. Akala ko di na babalik sa dating size. Haha!

True! Tummy flabs are my main problem — well, aside from fat arms, double chin — ay ang dami pala. Haha! Thanks for the compliment on our neighbourhood! We work hard to keep it that way! 😀

I used to run or walk in the morning also in my village. Our place’s pretty safe, and I just hate the fact that I can’t do it now because of my sleeping problems 🙂 Hopefully, I get my body clock back on track so I can share intimate moments with my family at the start of the day palang 🙂

We used to do walking around the neighbourhood too as our form of exercise. And then we got too busy for it. 🙁 Lately, I’m trying to do at least some very quick exercises inside the house just to melt away some fat.

It’s a very nice village! We also do walking! kaso ako lang, while my husband and son are biking hehe. Ang sarap talaga ng feeling pag naglalakad once in awhile. Not to mention, perfect bonding moment pa.

You have a lovely neighborhood. It’s nice to keep fit lalo na when you have young kids to run around with/after. hehe

we usually walk (around the subdivision) and swim (at the clubhouse) every morning when I’m still homeschooling my son. I agree doing this kind of activities are great learning opportunities for the kid.

I enjoy walks as it helps me clear my head. And honestly, it is my most preferred mode of exercise. I hope to do this someday too with my little boy. You’re lucky you have a good neighborhood!

When I saw the title, I just had to read it. I started running in Oman, every other day for 4km (insert nagbabagang araw ng middle east here). And then at UPD when I came back. When I got pregnant I resorted to walking. Not as exercise, really. I have resigned from work and stayed home full time so I don’t get to go out that much. I ask my husband to take me for afternoon walks on weekends while babywearing for my sanity’s sake. I just spoke to a clerk in the bank I frequent and he asked me if I’d like to try online banking. Sabi ko ayoko. Kasi yun na lang at grocery yung errands ko na nakakalakad ako outside. It’s my stress reliever and I love it. ♡

Buti ka pa, you can walk to do your errands! It’s not possible here because the malls, etc, are quite far. Pero stress reliever talaga ang walking no? Great bonding activity, too!

Great job on getting on your feet again! I wish I could go out and do the same but I think I don’t have the discipline to follow an exercise routine.

He loves you not only for who you are this very day but also for the person of glory and light you have the potential and the desire to become.

Hi Maan.I am glad that you found the time to walk again and I encourage you to do it even during weekends with or without your kid.An hour will be okay. We owe it to ourselves to take care of our health while we are still young and not wait for that time when we the kids have grown up and the signs of sedentary lifestyle had caught up on us.

    Cheers to a healthy lifestyle.
