Homeschooling Parenting

Exams, Vertigo Attacks, and Valentine’s Day

Welcome to another day in the life of a homeschooling mom! It’s Sunday and I just spent most of the day working on Yuri’s 2nd monthly exams for the 3rd quarter (they have 2 monthly exams + 1 quarterly exam per quarter). With Job still stuck abroad (lol), I am meeting yet another Valentine’s Day alone at home, but it’s not an issue. I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day. I would rather celebrate Christmas — I just love Christmas too much! ūüėÄ

Anyway, it seems like I was ranting about homeschooling in the beginning of this post, but I wasn’t really. On the contrary, we’re almost nearing the end of 3rd quarter (woot!) and we are still enjoying the stress-free homeschool life. We are still following nearly the same daily routine since we started and I think we are truly blessed to have found a system that works for us.

There are days, for sure, when I didn’t want to prepare lessons for the week or actually teach them. For example, last Sunday, I woke up with a bad case of vertigo. The last time I had a vertigo attack was 4 years ago, and it disappeared right after I did a maneuver (I forgot the name). This time, the vertigo improved¬†very slowly¬†and the recovery took days. In fact, right now, 7 days after the attack, I still get mildly dizzy if I dare turn my head the wrong way.

During the week, I also found out that my blood pressure was too low for me (30 years old, weighing 138-140 pounds at 160 cm). I know a low blood pressure is rarely a cause of concern, but I got mildly alarmed when, apart from the weakness and vertigo, my hands and feet also started feeling chilly. The symptoms improved when I started adding a Ferrous sulfate supplement to my daily multivitamins. Thank you, Lord!

Right now, I’m feeling much better than I did last week — which is good because there are 5 exams that needed to be written! By the way, we are not required to create our own exams in Chosen Education (where we are enrolled in), but I prefer exams tailor-made to suit our lessons and learning style. Since I am already finished, I’m taking my time to rest and watch a few episodes of the latest season of¬†Busted¬†on Netflix hehe.

I bought callos and bopis from our next-door neighbor ūüėÄ

(I’m craving for cake and chocolate because of all the posts I see on Facebook! I don’t want to order, though, because I’m feeling¬†kuripot.¬†Also,¬†I’m quite happy with the¬†bopis¬†and¬†callos¬†that I have at home. Yum!)

School Fiesta and Intramurals Week – TGIF!

I thought exam week was busy. I couldn’t wait for exam week to be over so that I could finally catch a break.

I was so naive.

This week was ten times busier than exam week! Last week, we only had to study for the exams, and their schedule, which was 4 days/1 subject per day, was very manageable. I even liked their time, 9:30 am, which I thought was a perfect fit for my work hours.

My hatid-sundo OOTD: my favorite striped shirt, River Island denim jeans (because shorts are not allowed), and Toms.

Yuri’s school is celebrating its Fiesta and Intramurals this week, and I think it’s safe to say I’ve been exhausted since Monday! Yuri is actually enrolled in the afternoon class, but since this week called for various celebrations, they needed to be in school at 7:30 am. Waking up early is not the problem, especially for me because I wake up at 5:30 everyday. The problem is that it throws us off our usual routines — both Yuri and I thrive on routine so it was truly a challenge.

Had to be very quick in preparing Yuri’s baon, for starters! In this lunch box: Mini Oreos, Milkana cheese, yema cake, and a banana

But it was a fun week, and I’m glad I was there. I’m still feeling bitter hehe about their Nutrition Month culmination. Growing up, we just had a simple program, went back to our classrooms after, and had regular class. This time, I didn’t know they had events and activities planned, and I wasn’t there at all while the other mommies were! After that, I made sure I’ll be present in all events.

The Flower Boy

Yuri was given his first ever school responsibility last Tuesday, a day before the school’s Fiesta mass. When I arrived to fetch him, I was informed that Yuri, along with another boy and two girls in his class, will be bringing flowers to the mass. I thought everyone in Kindergarten was required to bring flowers, but they just chose representatives per grade level.

Of course,¬†palengke¬†is the answer! We didn’t buy right after leaving school because I felt it was still too early, so we went home first and took a nap. Well, Yuri did. He didn’t wake up until around 4:45 pm and we still had to go to the neighborhood kiddie barbershop¬†for an overdue haircut. Continue Reading

National Bookstore’s Color and Calligraphy 2017

One of my absolute favourite stores in the world is National Bookstore.

It’s a no-brainer. I love books, pens, notebooks, stationery, school supplies, art supplies, even office supplies like staplers and tape dispensers. Where else to go but NBS? Nothing compares.

When I first knew about National Bookstore’s Color and Calligraphy fair, I was sure I was going to be there. I was already salivating at the thought of¬†all¬†the art and calligraphy supplies. I would figuratively drown in 0.5 tips and brush tips and at least 150 gsm paper. What got me jumping up and down, though, was an invitation to be part of their media preview. Oh, National Bookstore, you don’t need to tell me twice!

I got to Abreeza a few minutes after it opened, but at the atrium, where the Color and Calligraphy fair was happening, people were already milling around. I noticed teenagers and young kids examining the booths and claiming some spots in the art tables. Nice one, kids! I myself felt like I was in an art heaven of some sort. I think all the art supplies you will possibly need were there!

This is going to be a two-part post. For this part, I’ll give you a virtual tour of what I saw in the Color and Calligraphy fair. Prepare for picture overload! Continue Reading

iflix Goes to Davao!

If there’s one thing I love, it’s watching a good movie or a good television series.

I’ve encountered people who don’t watch TV at all, and deep inside my mind, I wonder how they do it. I mean, I’m no bimbo (at least I hope so! Haha!). Anyway, a¬†couple of weeks ago, I went to now one of my favourite restaurants, Rekado, not to eat (well, I did eat) but to attend the launching of iflix in Davao.

Although I’ve never availed of these before, I am a fan of streaming services which allow you to watch (and binge on) your favourite movies and shows legally and without breaking the bank. I’ve been eyeing iflix in particular because of its low rates (only P129 a month – much lower than the price of a movie ticket!) and ease of use. So when I got invited to its Davao City launch — and in my favourite restaurant to boot — for a night of good food and a movie, it was a no brainer. I should go.

The table centrepiece? Lurve!

After dinner, games, and the team’s presentation of what iflix is all about, we were treated to a movie. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the movie they had in store for us. Continue Reading

Messy Weekend: Elections + Mother’s Day + Yuri’s First Day of School!

WOW!

What a weekend!

It’s already Tuesday evening and I’m still reeling over the weekend that transpired. I don’t think I ever had a weekend as busy and¬†brimming as this one. Well, maybe except Christmas and New Year. But that’s another story. Let’s talk about the weekend that was. Here’s a photo diary!

Enrolment + Trip to the Dentist

Eye Level Davao

We liked Eye Level so much that we decided to go back last Saturday to enrol. Yuri’s excited to attend sessions!

After going to Eye Level, we went to our family dentist’s clinic to have Yuri’s teeth checked. It was Yuri’s very first time to visit the dentist so he wasn’t comfortable sitting on the dentist’s chair yet. So I sat down and sat him on my lap while our dentist prodded at his mouth. He has one cavity that needs filling up and we’re going back this Saturday. Good luck¬†teh.

Nothing But Mott’s Apple Juice For Us!

A month ago, just a couple of weeks before Christmas, I was invited to an event hosted by one of my trusted brands when it comes to Yuri:¬†Mott’s Apple Juice.

Yuri is a drink-person. He loves drinking (more like gulping) water and fruit juices throughout the day. Sometimes milk, more often water and juice. In fact, right now, he’s just back from the playground and thirstily drinking fresh calamansi juice.

So unless I have fresh fruit on hand (read: citrus), I always make sure that I have some juice in the fridge. Of course, I prefer them to be sugar-free and, as much as possible, free from most unwanted additives.

We do buy several brands of juices but when it comes to apple juice, I always go back to my failproof brand, which is Mott’s. I am such a loyalist that I even wrote about it in my old blog! For starters, it’s sugar-free and is¬†100% apple juice.¬†No unnecessary flavouring or, ick, food colouring.

Second, it has a high dose of Vitamin C, perfect for building up the immune system of my preschooler. An 8 fl oz serving provides 2 fruit servings per day! My son¬†loves¬†fruit but we don’t always have access to fresh ones so 100% fruit juice does well in a pinch.

Third, even¬†I¬†enjoy it because it tastes just like apple cider. Promise! All I need to do is grab a goblet, pour some chilled Mott’s apple juice into it, and feel like an adult.¬†Drink it like it was real apple cider and they would be none the wiser. Haha!
