Messy Stories: I’m a Stressed but Blessed Mama!

It’s almost 9:30 pm now and we are supposed to be studying for Yuri’s second quarter periodic exam, which starts on Thursday. But obviously we are not. I’m here typing my fingers off while Yuri is dancing to the tune of… guess what… Baby Shark! LOL.

Yep, it’s my fault. Again. Sorry, Yuri! It’s the weekend and I’m very busy with real estate work. Heck, it’s almost Monday na nga eh hahahuhu (good thing there’s no class tomorrow — but there’s still work!). I’m doing a lot of things, and even when I’m not actually doing them, there’s thousands of things running on my mind. And that’s still stressful haha!

Segue: My period is delayed for more than a week now and there’s still no sign of it arriving soon because I’m not having PMS symptoms. It’s not alarming because I don’t feel sick and I’m 101% certain that I’m not pregnant lol, but I have very regular periods so I’m not sure why I’m delayed this month. Is this stress-related?

Anyway, I did spend a good chunk of the weekend making Yuri’s worksheets and catching up on the lessons I wasn’t able to work on this month. You’d think making worksheets is easy, but even if I’m already using a laptop and a printer, it’s still ma-effort and time-consuming. The things we do for love!

Yuri Lately

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of doing it for Yuri, though. He’s such a good kid and I ~humbly~ think he deserves nothing but the best. He has his pilyo moments, but overall, I think he’s very nice and understanding for his age, malambing, and on top of that, an honor student pa! Did I mention he was one of his class’s representatives for the Math quiz bee last week? The one I stressed about last Monday hehe. His partner was Isabella, who happens to be his girl best friend. Too bad I didn’t have a picture of him (looooong story). What did we do to deserve this child?

Anyway, we’re not studying right now because aside from the fact that I finished doing the worksheets late, even when I started yesterday, I’m still waiting for a video to upload to send to a client. We’ll do the studying tomorrow and hope for the best lol.

Oh by the way, I want to share with you something Yuri said earlier while we were having lunch outside.

Dental Appointment + Outfit Twinning + School Supplies Shopping

Happy mother’s day! Personally, even though I’m a mama myself, I don’t really celebrate mother’s day. However, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it either. So if it empowers you as a mother, go ahead and celebrate your being awesome!

Dental Appointment

Last weekend was another full weekend for me. Saturday was Yuri’s and my sister’s dental appointment. My sister had her teeth “molded” in plaster in preparation for her braces. Her teeth were overlapping so she needs to have them fixed.

Yuri was also scheduled for a check-up. Good news is that unlike last year, where he didn’t even want to sit on the chair by himself, now he did it willingly and without any prodding.

The bad news is that some of his molars had decay (this, despite brushing his teeth 2-3 times a day — sugar is the culprit, as usual) and our dentist recommended filling them in. Yikes! Yes, we are serious about dental hygiene, but Yuri does eat a lot of bread and pasta and sweets. So there. Also, I’m also suspecting Yuri’s current toothpaste, but it’s just a suspicion not to be taken seriously lels.

Dentist’s tip: Even if your oral hygiene is great, if you eat a lot of carbs and sugar in between brushing, you’re still at risk of getting cavities. In her words, it’s not just how often you brush your teeth but what you eat in between. So limit carbs and sugar!

As we all know, filling requires taking out the decaying part of the tooth by “grinding” them. She told me she will have to refer me to a pediatric dentist because most boys Yuri’s age don’t cooperate and need to be sedated. I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of sedation, and I think our dentist (she’s been our dentist since I was a toddler) noticed that, so she asked me if I would like her to try filling just one tooth. I agreed, of course. I’m much more comfortable with her compared to a new dentist.

“Grinding” hehe

Yay yay yay! Yuri did not only fully cooperate but also didn’t even cry. Thank you, Lord! He flinched at the first touch of the “grinder” but didn’t move away from it or complain. When Doc was done, he even gave her a thumbs-up sign. We could’ve proceeded with another tooth but there was another patient waiting so we’ll return next week. Hopefully everything will be finished before the school year starts.

Tired from the appointment? Hahaha

Outfit Twinning with Yuri!

I may not necessarily celebrate Mother’s Day but that doesn’t mean I won’t dress up for it! My close friend, JM, sells twinning outfits for mothers and daughters, but occasionally, she sells mom and son outfits. When one came out in Yuri’s size, I just had to get it.

Dress from Mommy Trends, old cardigan, old Coach bag, Crocs flats
Yuri: Shirt from Mommy Trends, Oshkosh shorts, Converse sneakers

Wow I miss doing an OOTD! I rarely have OOTD photos taken nowadays because I feel insecure about how I currently look lol but I just can’t help it with this outfit. I find it so cute! I love that it’s not tacky (in fact, you will need to be really observant to notice that our outfits match) but they look good together.

It’s in the details

And I’m not just saying this because JM is my friend. I really love the clothes and I love how I look in it haha!

School Supplies Shopping

Why is it that the younger the student is, the longer the list of supplies?! Yuri’s requirement list, which we got from school after we enrolled (which reminds me — I forgot to write a post about it!), is an entire bond paper filled with names of supplies. And that’s just the basics.

I wasn’t planning to buy school supplies earlier because I wanted to set a date for it to get everything done. However, at Gaisano Mall (we like going to Gaisano Mall now because the Pop-Tarts are there haha), I saw that the entire atrium was turned into a school supply fair. While I love National Bookstore, the prices are lower in GMall. For example, a box of Crayola So-Big in NBS is like P110; there, an exact same box is just P88. Elmer’s Glue is P25 for 50 ml; there it’s just P19. A big difference considering my tendency to hoard, and the fair is right there in front of me, so I decided to just buy whatever I could buy.

There were also socks, underwear, uniforms, bags, lunch boxes and bags, even hygiene stuff. Virtually everything a student’s going to need for school. So I bought na what I can buy.

Just a feeeewwww of what I bought. I didn’t take a picture of the entire haul anymore because it’s just boring academic stuff lels

I was personally curious about the lesson plan notebooks and the So Big Crayolas. They’re required to use lesson plan notebooks (with blue and red lines), and I saw K-12 ones from DepEd itself. So maybe it’s also a requirement in other schools? I don’t know. I do remember that when I was in Grade 1, we used lesson plan notebooks, too.

Yuri has never used So Big crayons. When he was about 2, I bought him toddler crayons that he rarely used since our old crazy yaya misplaced them. I saw them again just last year and they’re still unused. Yuri has always used regular crayons and never had a problem using them even when he didn’t know how to hold a pencil. So it came to me as a surprise that his school is requiring So Big crayons. I thought they were for nursery students or something. I didn’t know Senior Kindergarteners were also using them. Will the teacher allow Yuri to use regular crayons if he finds these jumbo ones too uncomfortable to use? Hmmm….

There were some items on my list that I didn’t find there but at least I’m already more than halfway done with school shopping. Woot woot!

How did you spend your weekend, mommies?

Last Day at Eye Level + Nighttime Toilet Training

This post has been sitting in my… wait for it… drafts for way too long!

It’s been terribly hot this summer — where’s my summer breeze to make me feel fine? — but just last night, we had a strong thunderstorm. It was the same as the thunderstorm we had a couple of Saturdays ago where our electricity even got cut off for 5 hours.  And for the first time ever, our home office flooded (a little bit). Thank God it occurred to me to check the office just when the leaking started. (God has been giving me small reminders lately that went on to reveal bigger things. Thank you, Lord!)

I actually meant to post this almost a full month ago. For time reference, Yuri’s last day at Eye Level was on April 8th, and he got fully nighttime toilet-trained on April 13th.

Last Day at Eye Level

There’s nothing about Eye Level that both Yuri and I don’t love. Honest. I already made a proclamation of love here so I won’t go into details anymore. I just want to say that Yuri entered the enrichment centre literally illiterate (does that make sense? haha). Seriously. He just turned four then and before that, I didn’t think it was important to pressure him into learning how to read and write. After all, he wouldn’t be three forever.

(I have nothing against parents whose children were taught to read and write earlier. Different families, different priorities.)

By the time he turned four, though, I knew our time was up: he needed to learn how to read and write. When I enrolled Yuri to Eye Level’s English program May of 2016, he didn’t even know how to hold a pencil. After assessing him, we started at a pre-literacy level, where we even struggled with writing lines! I loved teaching Yuri, but for some reason, teaching him how to draw straight lines, crooked lines, and curves brought me at my wit’s end.

But after persevering, both in the centre and at home, suddenly Yuri was zooming through writing letters. We had to learn the correct strokes (I was lax at first but later learned to abide by the rules — penmanship does matter). At first, he got B’s and C’s on his booklets, but later on, they became all A’s. After several months, he was already on to reading and forming simple words.

From not knowing how to hold a pencil, he’s already writing and reading and spelling words.I know this is in no way an extraordinary feat, but for us, who started the year illiterate, this was amazing progress. And I credit much of it to Eye Level. The one-on-one hands-on sessions as well as the engaging activities and exercises helped a lot.

Last day at Eye Level today 😭#sepanx

However, Job and I, even though we are 101% satisfied with Eye Level, decided to pull Yuri out after 10 months of being with the learning centre. This is plainly because Yuri is about to enter formal schooling for the very first time in his life. We felt like we all needed a break from any sort of pressure and just focus on resting and transitioning to school life this summer. We didn’t even enrol him to any summer class this year. I also want Yuri to be able to focus on schooling alone when it starts. By the time he adjusts to our new routines, we may come back to Eye Level. This time, we will be going for Math instead of English. Who knows?

Nighttime Toilet Training Saga

My mother has been nagging me about this for so long. You see, even though Yuri got successfully potty-trained before he turned 2, he has still been wearing pull-ups at night. I don’t know; I just felt like he wasn’t ready yet. Each morning, he wakes up with a full pull-up and he does pee a lot at night. In the early days, I tried having him wear his cloth diapers at night. But barely an hour into sleep, he wakes up because it’s already full of pee. So I just shrugged nighttime toilet training off and waited until he was ready.

I knew he was ready a couple of weeks before he turned five. He still wakes up with a wet pull-up but that’s because he pees upon waking up. It’s also the perfect timing because it’s summer and he pees a lot less during the summer. But then, we travelled and I felt like it wasn’t the best time to toilet train. We were sleeping in a hotel room on a hotel bed, after all! I just didn’t want to risk it.

Heels over head 😂

A post shared by Marie Angeli Laxa (@maanlaxa) on

When we got back from our vacation, I waited for the next long weekend to come. It happened to be the weekend of the Holy Week. Our first night of no-pull ups happened on the night of Maundy Thursday. I just followed the basic pieces of advice: not giving too much liquid at night and peeing before bedtime. That’s it.

And it was a success! I didn’t get to sleep much that night, though. I was so paranoid he would wet the bed so I kept waking up to check. Nonetheless, he woke up with the bed fully dry and the first thing he did was pee. Teehee. It really does make a difference to wait until the child is ready.

My takeaway from this mothering experience? There’s no competition when it comes to nighttime toilet training. After all, it’s a bodily function that is not easily controllable. We might have used up more pull ups than kids who got toilet trained earlier, but it’s okay. There’s no use pressuring a child who just couldn’t keep his bed dry because he can’t help it. Because I decided to wait until I was sure Yuri was ready, he didn’t have to feel pressured or frustrated. Because we waited, nighttime toilet training for us was super easy, stress-free, and tear-free!

Actually, come to think of it, this can be applied to teaching literacy, too! In other words, raising a child shouldn’t be a competition.

Christmas 2016 as Told Through Pictures

Hi! I haven’t blogged in like forever! Today, Wednesday, is the first day this month that I didn’t have to do anything outside of work. My December is so busy, but busy is a good thing, so thank you Lord!

Let’s assume you’re interested in my life. I’ll tell you all about it. Through pictures. Because I’m too lazy to write a picture is worth a thousand words… Continue Reading

Mixed Mess

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like a Messy Christmas!

I still can’t believe there’s only a little over 10 days before Christmas.

Half of me thinks it’s too soon (wasn’t it just yesterday when I was preparing for Christmas 2015???), while the other half of me couldn’t believe it is still December 12. My calendar is almost full!

Just last Saturday, I spent my day in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato. It’s just 3 hours away from Davao City so I didn’t spend the night there. I came there for two events – my dear friend JM’s daughter’s Dedication Day and my cousin Kuya Jason’s pamanhikan. It was just sheer coincidence that both of these important events were scheduled on the same day and took place in the same city!

Off to Kidapawan City 😎

It’s the Dedication Day of my second goddaughter (and third godchild), Mia! She’s sooo purdy I can’t even. Hope you enjoy Ninang’s gifts!

Welcome to the family, Yvonne! 👯

Kuya Jason and his fiancee, Yvonne, are actually set to be married on the 22nd, so this pamanhikan was just for formality. More relatives will be arriving in the coming weeks so it will be a lot busier!

And during the day that I happened to be out of town, I got called twice by couriers, informing me of the delivery of two different packages. I’ve been receiving packages almost every day. That’s how my Christmas seasons always look like lol.

Because I was out the entire day last Saturday, I made sure to finish all the Christmas gift wrapping the night before. I also had to make a mad dash to buy a gift for my baby in the Mommy Bloggers Philippines gift swap, have it wrapped (I ended up buying a Christmas-themed box to make the LBC staff’s life easier), and then have it shipped. I actually already bought a gift earlier last week but I had a last minute change of mind. Continue Reading

Messy Life Lately: Events, Dates, and a Surprise Car Blessing

I don’t know what it is about -ber months (I was gonna say winter but we’re not fooling anyone here…) that makes all people super duper busy. In my case, well, let’s just say the floor didn’t get swept in over a week. It’s icky. The laundry has been sitting inside the laundry bag for days now, begging to be put inside the closet. The house is just beyond messy.

I was that busy I wish I was kidding. Huhu. Then again, being busy means I’m alive and active and I have a healthy social life! Hurrah! So thank you Lord for keeping me busy. Here’s what kept me busy for the past week (okay, a week and a day) as told by Instagram photos.

Saturday: A Date With My Best Friend

Do you know how it feels to carry a burden in your heart without having someone you can tell it to? Though I also have matters that I keep to myself, most of the time, I don’t have trouble sharing (I’m a “sharer” though I prefer to call myself a “story-teller” hahaha). My best friend George is my complete opposite. She almost never shares what she’s going through and likes to keep her problems to herself. So I really cherish those moments when we get the chance to have a heart-to-heart talk. You know I love you. <3

Sunday: Food Trip With The Fam-Bam

Sunday lunch with the fambam ❤️

Sunday we set a lunch date with my cousin, Kuya Jason, his fiancee, Matet, and supposedly with our other cousin, Ate Maricel, who was visiting from Cebu. However, Ate Maricel failed to make it so we just had lunch by ourselves. I suggested we ate lunch at Rekado, a restaurant that serves unique Filipino dishes. I was able to try their food last year but never had the chance to come back. I’m glad they all loved the food, especially my mum who’s the pickiest eater I know!

We then had dessert at the most unlikely place: a dimsum place in Gaisano Mall called Dimsum Break. But this xie ping cum halo halo was the bomb!

26 Questions on my 26th Year

My gift to myself this year is a long weekend. 🙂

I spent my 26th birthday last Tuesday, June 7, and I took two days off from work (Monday and Tuesday). I was planning on spending the entire long weekend just lazing around, eating junk, and binge-watching Descendants of the Sun.

Well, I did achieve most of the three. I watched Descendants of the Sun from dawn of Saturday to Monday midnight — it’s my first time to watch because I never had the time before last week — and boy oh boy was I hooked. I love everything about it: the actors (Song Joong Ki, because of you, it’s as if the name Lee Min Ho doesn’t exist anymore in my world), the storyline, the amazing cinematography, even the OST. It’s such a pity that it only spanned 16 episodes like how dare you take us on a lovely ride and cut it short.

Anyway, yeah, Joong Ki, it was really nice to meet you.

tumblr_o3adsmdWrH1qeo89ao1_540

It was nice to meet me too, right? Sorry Joong Ki but I’m taken…

Other than that, I wasn’t able to truly laze around because I suddenly had appointments and my colleague, Sarah, unexpectedly gave birth on Sunday. I then met my goddaughter on Monday! But it was still generally an awesome long weekend.

My goddaughter, Xandrah. Isn't she the prettiest?

My goddaughter, Xandrah. Isn’t she the prettiest?

I planned on doing a blog marathon but life happened, so I wasn’t able to publish anything last week. So here’s a belated birthday post. Because I’m not feeling sentimental (it’s only 10 am on a weekend, after all), I decided to do something fun — and outdated, lol! I got the inspiration from a Facebook On This Day entry, from a time when publishing memes and tagging your friends was all the rage.

Messy Weekend: Elections + Mother’s Day + Yuri’s First Day of School!

WOW!

What a weekend!

It’s already Tuesday evening and I’m still reeling over the weekend that transpired. I don’t think I ever had a weekend as busy and brimming as this one. Well, maybe except Christmas and New Year. But that’s another story. Let’s talk about the weekend that was. Here’s a photo diary!

Enrolment + Trip to the Dentist

Eye Level Davao

We liked Eye Level so much that we decided to go back last Saturday to enrol. Yuri’s excited to attend sessions!

After going to Eye Level, we went to our family dentist’s clinic to have Yuri’s teeth checked. It was Yuri’s very first time to visit the dentist so he wasn’t comfortable sitting on the dentist’s chair yet. So I sat down and sat him on my lap while our dentist prodded at his mouth. He has one cavity that needs filling up and we’re going back this Saturday. Good luck teh.

Not A Bad Day

Not a Bad Day

Today was almost a bad day.

1

It all started when I had an intense stomach ache around midnight. A family friend and neighbour celebrated her birthday, and we ate, well, a lot of things. But what caused my stomach ache was that glass of Coke. I forgot I couldn’t tolerate soft drinks (well, not anymore) and I just drank it because, you know, Coke and lechon go so well together. I regret it.

Now, our bedroom is on the second floor of the house and we have no bathroom on that floor (long story). So I had to go down to relieve my stomach ache. I knocked on my sister’s door and, because she was still awake, I asked her to look after Yuri, who was already fast asleep. I confidently went downstairs and got to business.

Imagine my shock when I found the doors to both bedrooms closed. I thought my sister closed the door after her and laid on the bed beside Yuri. I entered the room and, voila! No sister, just my 3-year old Yuri sleeping on a bed with no railings and with no one watching over him. My sister apparently got tired of waiting for me and went back to her room to sleep.

Mixed Mess: Whirlwind Week + Travel Itch + Other Stories

Oh my goodness, the week is finally coming to an end! And I survived it!

I’ve been having straight busy weeks for some time now, but this week is a different kind of hectic because our family has to deal with a sickness, too. However, work was very hectic this week, too. Aside from training our 3 new hires, I myself have to learn new tasks. On top of that, everyone, especially the staff from Australia, seems to be getting sick. Even my co-pilot Lenz had to miss work the other day because she had a fever – and she’s absent again today because she’s going to Camiguin. Life is fair!

Which leads me to my first story…
