Of Tonsillitis, Flu, and The Vitamin Dilemma

I haven’t blogged in almost half a month!

That’s a record for me not counting the hiatuses… Actually, my hiatuses were even shorter than this one! I wasn’t meaning to not blog. I didn’t have a choice, really. First, Yuri got sick with flu. Then, got sick with flu and tonsillitis. In between our sicknesses, even though I had time to blog, I just didn’t have the energy to do so!

Yuri’s Flu

A couple of Fridays ago, Yuri went home feeling lethargic. I thought he felt warm, too, but he always had relatively high temperature, so I got out the thermometer to be sure. Ayun na, 38 degrees. Our consolation was that it was a Friday and he had the entire weekend to recover.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a simple case of cold. Based on his symptoms, I’m pretty confident to say it was a full-blown flu. I decided that if ever his temperature goes higher than 39 degrees, we will go to the doctor na. Good thing it didn’t. It did go as high as 38.8 degrees on Saturday night, but it consistently went lower after that. I didn’t feel like we needed to go to the hospital as everything seemed manageable. I just gave him paracetamol round-the-clock and let him rest as much as he needed to.

It also helped a lot that he drinks a lot of water. On a good day, he drinks maybe more than 1.5 liters or 6-7 glasses of water (5-year old’s only need to drink 1 liter or 5 glasses in a day). When he got sick, I think it doubled! He was drinking literally every minute and was peeing every now and then. By Sunday afternoon, he was already feeling better and was well enough to go to school on Monday. I didn’t let him go to school, though, to make sure he has already recovered 101%.

His loyal Thermos always at his side

My Flu… and Tonsillitis!

Everything was well… until last Friday when started feeling lethargic. I was already sure I caught Yuri’s virus, whatever it was, because I was already coughing. I didn’t expect to get the whole flu (the works) though because I rarely get fever. My token illness has always had something to do with the gut, not fever. When Yuri was sick, I even announced that I don’t remember the last time I had fever. I shouldn’t have said that haha!

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to use that weekend to rest (which I should have done). Yuri has upcoming exams and there were deadlines to chase so I had to work overtime. I did rest whenever I found time to do so, though it wasn’t plenty.

I also had really sore throat. At first I attributed it to the fever and cough. I mean, sore throat is common when you have fever and cough, right? But it grew really sore and I couldn’t eat anything but soup and lugaw. I had the sense to check my throat on Monday when I was feeling well enough and saw that my tonsils had white spots. Eek! On top of that, I had severe dry cough. I was so afraid I’ll cough my tonsils out, LOL!

I went to see the doctor Monday afternoon. I went to MDMRC (Metro Davao Medical and Research Center) instead of San Pedro Hospital (which used to be my go-to hospital). MDMRC is a new hospital that is a lot nearer, and since it’s new, the clinics were also new. I love it! I’m contemplating on switching doctors for Yuri, too. I actually saw a family doctor (I love her, too!) so maybe I can take Yuri to her instead and we’ll have the same doctor.

It’s a Friday again today, and I’m feeling a lot better! No more cactus in my throat and I can eat normal food again. No more lethargy!

By the way, happy first day of December!!!

On a positive note, I lost a total of 2 kilos that weekend! Now that I’m eating normally again, I gained some of the weight I lost, but it was still amazing. I’m going to do a lugaw diet again and hope to lose weight again hahaha!

Anyway, I’m rethinking the vitamins we’re using. Yuri and I are both taking chewable vitamin C (a generic brand) and ever since the rainy season began, we’ve been doubling our dosage. But obviously, it didn’t work. I know not all vitamins are the same so I’m thinking of switching to Kirkland. Does anyone take Kirkland vitamins? How is it?

Road to Fitness: My Collection of Healthy Snacks

I was meaning to blog three times a week.

Hahahahaha as if.

I mean, I’m still aspiring to blog a lot more often than once a week (if lucky). However, life does get in the way and even though there is so much to tell, it’s hard for me to find the time to tell it. But I’m trying my best to make time.

One of the reasons why I blog is to keep myself accountable. Blogging has kept me accountable for the way I parent, handle my relationships, even how I manage money. There is something else, though, that I must be held accountable for: my health and fitness.

A few weeks ago, I officially started my diet. I’ve been trying my best to stick to it (although there were a handful of occasions where I didn’t have any choice but to eat what was available). However, the hardest thing — for me — is managing my snacking habit. I’m a serial snacker! I know what’s best is to completely remove snacking from my daily diet, but a snack or two gets me through the long afternoons.

My solution for now? Get a box just for me and fill it with healthy snacks. I want to show what’s inside my “healthy” box!

Disclaimer: I don’t intend to eat them all at once ha! Some of them I’ve had for a month na. I eat a small amount at a time of whatever I fancy, which works well because almost all of them come in resealable packs.

Different kinds of trail mix and fruit snacks which I bought from Gaisano Mall (price per pack is approximately P130-P170)

Peanut butter and dark chocolate bliss balls from Take Root (P130 each)

Valor sugar-free chocolate (P150)

Sugar-free chocolates (left) and coconut sugar-covered cacao nibs (right) which I bought at Citymall in Tagum City (P75 for the chocolates, P175 for the cacao nibs)

Mango-banana and guava-banana fruit crisps from Oh So Healthy (P95 each)

I wasn’t able to take a picture of my actual box, but it’s just your regular transparent plastic box. I bought mine from Japan Home Centre for P95, if I remember it correctly. I also chucked in a small box of McVities lite digestives for whenever I’m feeling hungry and can’t be satiated by anything sugar-free lol. It’s not healthy (at least I’m honest haha) but I think it’s better than white bread — which I can easily eat a lot of.

Oh, I also have these. Like the sugar-free chocolate and cacao nibs, I also bought this at Citymall in Tagum but from a different booth. I think it was called Go Lokal? These are not snacks but were really yummy hehe.

Mushroom Tempura (P150) and veggie noodles (P175)

What are your favorite healthy snacks?

A Literally Heavy Burden (The Start of A Fitness Journey)

I have a heavy burden… and it’s not metaphorical.

Just a segue before I begin. Last week, two of my closest friends separately unloaded their troubles on me. One is one of my oldest and bestest friends while the other is my work colleague. I’m not in the position to disclose their problems – and I don’t think I even have the right to talk about them – but being chosen to be their confidante is a privilege.

Open note to these two friends. To my work co-pilot, you are a smart & strong woman and I’m sure you are ready to face whatever life throws your way. But I’m happy you got the outcome you were hoping for. 🙂

To my dear friend: I’m here and you were never, are not, will not ever be a burden to me. I cannot in good conscience allow you to be miserable and I want you to find your happiness. I want you to find yourself , a bright future, a new hope in life. And hey, love, too! I love you and will always be your biggest fan.

But my friends’ dilemmas are not the “burden” that I’m referring to. No, not at all, I didn’t even feel the weight. There, I just gave you the clue. Weight.

I have a heavy burden. It’s not metaphorical, and it weighs 63 kilos. Continue Reading

Our 3 Must-Haves For Fighting Flu

It’s flu season again!

Actually, we (at least in our household) get flu throughout the year, but the intense weather — hot days alternating with gloomy, rainy days — take toll on our immune system so we catch a cold more often these months. In fact, I am coughing while typing this, while Yuri is sneezing. Boo!

He had to miss school the other day. So I'm posting this picture of Yuri appreciating his "Good Job" stamp from last week instead.

He had to miss school the other day. So I’m posting this picture of Yuri appreciating his “Good Job” stamp from last week instead.

So on the onset of July (which also happens to be the month when dengue cases escalate!), I make sure I have these three flu-fighters at home:

1. Vitamins

IMG_6947

Better safe than sorry, they say, and I believe so. I’d rather take a couple of minutes each day making sure that we all have taken vitamins than regret not doing so!

Wert Philippines has been sending us Nutri-10 Plus vitamins since last year, and these have undoubtedly help made Yuri grow bigger and stronger. I also believe the nutrients in Nutri-10 plus, especially its Vitamin C content, help Yuri get tougher when it comes to fighting flu and cold. It still happens, but they’re almost always manageable.

The Night That Was A Blur

I can’t sleep.

I’m actually doing several things at once.

  • Talking to a prospect regarding certain subdivision projects in the city (#PartTimeBrokerThings).
  • Chatting with my workmates and commiserating over problems (which almost always arise on Thursdays).
  • Reading my latest Kindle purchase (I need to limit my purchases).
  • Watching an episode of On the Wings of Love (for the first time – didn’t get to focus on it, too bad).
  • Making sure every single door at home is locked (#OCDproblems).
  • Accepting Duterte’s decision (whatever it is).
  • Looking for that piece of chocolate I swear they didn’t discover yet (it was bought just this afternoon).
  • Regretting drinking that cup of coffee earlier (I don’t even drink coffee).
  • Blogging (obviously).

And waiting for Mama’s call regarding Papa’s condition in the hospital.

Let’s Talk About Health Care

Health care in the Philippines

I didn’t report to work last Wednesday because I needed to see the doctor for my eyes. You see, I’ve had eye allergies for almost a month now and regular allergy meds are not doing the job.

HMO Philippines

This little boy came along

Well, if you know me, you would know that I rarely see doctors. I know it’s inadvisable, but I often resort to self-medication and/or natural remedies. However, as I age, I realise they’re no longer working. I also noticed that I’ve had more trips to the hospital this year than in the last 10 years of my life.

(Not including maternity checkups, of course. Those were not for a sickness.)

10 Reasons Why I Need to Lose Weight

10 Reasons Why I Need to Lose Weight

I’m sad.

Last year, in my old blog, I talked about slowly gaining weight as I was weaning Yuri off the breast. He was just 2 years old then and was still nursing, but it wasn’t as often as his sessions when he was a newborn (of course), which made me lose a lot of weight. As in 20-25 kilograms.

I was gaining weight last year but it wasn’t so drastic since I still nursed, ate a good diet, and occasionally worked out.

Now, I’m yaya-less (read: no time for workouts), still a voracious eater, and completely stopped breastfeeding.

In other words, I’m fat. Huhu.

10 Reasons Why I Need to Lose Weight

To motivate myself to start dieting and find time to work out today, I  wrote this list of reasons why I need to lose weight.

TEN

Before, I used to be done dressing up in 5 minutes tops. I just pick out a pretty dress from my closet and it almost always fits me well.

Now, those 5 minutes easily extend to 30 (or more) because only so few of my clothes still fit me. If they do, I have to check in the mirror if I actually look decent in it.

NINE

Still on the issue of clothes, before, I’ll just order whatever dress or piece of clothing online and, when they arrive, they always fit.

Today, I have a bag of newly purchased but never worn clothes which I should either bring to the seamstress or re-sell.

EIGHT

I need to lose weight for possible future reunions and get-togethers.

SEVEN

I need to lose weight because I love how it felt when I was 10 kilograms lighter. Everything felt easy to do – even going up and down our stairs.

Now I just feel heavy and bulky and out of breath.

SIX

I can no longer take OOTDs. I tried but got horrified at the pictures. Okay, I’m exaggerating, sorry. Honestly though, I no longer feel as confident to have my picture taken as before.

FIVE

I need to lose weight because I don’t want to be bigger than Job – which makes it even more challenging because he’s fit. Haha. Huhu.

FOUR

I need to lose weight because I noticed I easily tire nowadays. I can’t even play with Yuri for a long time – which makes homeschooling difficult.

THREE

I need to lose weight because I need to go back to eating a healthy diet. We’ve started eating white rice again this year because a close family friend also recently started harvesting from his farm. But this month, I insisted we go back to eating brown rice.

TWO

I need to lose weight as a motivation to keep moving and minimise my own screen time. One of the woes of being a WAHM is the lack of choice when it comes to movement and screen time. You have to be seated for a good portion of the day in front of a computer.

I need to make sure I’m not a complete slob sedentary person!

ONE

And finally, I need to lose weight because my father’s been seeing doctors (with an s) since last weekend. Aside from high blood pressure (he had a stroke back in 2006) and gout, we found out he has high creatinine, which can lead to kidney ailments.

For the sake of everyone I love, I want to grow old healthy and without ailments. And, given my father’s medical history, I really need to exert more effort into living a healthy lifestyle.

Thus, losing weight is only a side effect.

10 Reasons Why I Need to Lose Weight

What about you? What motivates you to lose weight or maintain a healthy lifestyle?
